The work involved the preparation of plans, specifications, and technical reports to reconstruct and/or repair a number of airfield pavements that generally consisted of Portland Concrete Cement (PCC). The program centerpiece was the reconstruction of the main runway.
The main runway project involved reconstructing a 12,350-foot runway from a 300-foot width to a 150-foot width while relocating the runway crown point 50 feet. It entailed complete concrete pavement reconstruction for the first and last 1,000-foot ends and converting the center 10,350 feet from concrete pavement to asphalt in accordance with military standards.
Because of North Dakota’s environment, the asphalt was highly specialized to accommodate the severe temperature variations (140 F) and the high aircraft wheel loads. The project was expedited in a seven-month construction window due to the high cost of deploying personnel while the runway was closed.
